Introduction

Permissions in the LabTech System are split into 3 areas. They are set per user and control the main access to the system.

  • Client Permissions are used to control access to items under each Client.
  • Group Permissions control the access the technician gains to a set of Computers.
  • User Permissionsare accumulative and are assigned to User Classes and not to the end-users directly.
    • Users are made members of these Classes and the permissions for each class are combined to create the permission set.

Note: Best Practices state that you should keep each class set with as few permissions as possible. Then the users should be made members of multiple classes. This way you can see exactly what permissions a user has by the classes name.

Important! Do NOT give Web Access to the Super Admin class as this can create a security risk.

Limiting Clients

Groups

users_groups_01

  • The Group a user is a member of will determine what Computers and Clients the user will have access to. The Groups are combined with the subgroups and a list of Computers will be generated. The Clients that these Computers belong too will be available too.

  • You may also limit access a user has by assigning them only specific clients. If a user is not assigned a specific set of clients, those clients computers will not be listed in the groups the user has access to nor will the user see them in the Navigation Tree.

Reviewing Permissions

To review the effective permissions of a user:

  • Right click on the user in the Navigation Tree and select Permissions.
    • This will show the Navigation Tree as the user would see it.
  • Click any item in the list to see the permissions for that item shown on the right.
  • You may also access this from the Modify User > View Permissions button.
